In my last Blog, I started talking about these 3 horses that I had currently in training at Ohana Farm. There is a Spotted
Draft Gelding, A young Gaited Mare and a Young Arabian Mare.
As I mentioned before, I found this particular herd fascinating because there were so many interesting layers to each horses’ story. The two mares were rescues from the Nurse mare foal industry. This in itself was a huge piece of what shaped the two
girls behavior and coping mechanisms. What I found interesting was how the two mares with the same traumatic circumstances coped very differently. And developed very differently. I mentioned that both these young mares had a propensity for kicking and it made them unsafe and a bit unpredictable to be around.
As I
studied and spent time with these horses in their field, I began to peel away the layers that I needed to reveal to know what is the best direction with each individual horse. I found the two mares to be gregarious but also needing to develop focus, and willingness to engage in a working relationship which is required prior to mounted training. I found the Draft horse to be a bit backed off people, somewhat anxious at times for various reasons and also having some physical issues which needed a
physio approach. My job in the Liberty foundation phase with any horse is to 1. Observe the horses character closely 2. Build a relationship with the horse ( my role with the horse can take many forms, it is in essence, whatever the horse needs me to be) 3. Figure out how to start introducing training concepts in a fun, organic way based on what is going on in the moment. 4. Start designing a curriculum based on the horses’ character and developmental
stage.

Trust can be a sticky and complicated thing. Or, once examined, it seem deceptively simple.
When I was younger, trust was a make-or-break thing. Others had to prove themselves to me in order for me to extend it to them. If my trust was shaken, I ran for the hills, stepping away from friendships and relationships because of what I perceived to be violations of trust.
Now that I’m older, I recognize that there were times when I was untrustworthy myself. If we’re lucky, time plus experience gives us clearer vision.
Where does our friend the horse fit into this “trust” thing? Many training techniques do a good job of working with the ways horses learn, and most involve gaining a horse’s trust. But I think we can mistake a lot of what horses do as reflections of their trust (or lack of trust) in us.

All About Equine
Animal Rescue
|
AAE was founded in 2009 by a couple of individuals who were heartbroken to see large numbers of horses being neglected, abandoned, or sent to auction/slaughter due in part to the economic downturn experienced by much of the country and Northern California,
in particular.
Wanting to make a difference, they determined to do all they could with what resources they could muster. They worked to turn a small family-owned ranchette into a working horse facility, and in June 2009, the concept of the rescue became a reality when the first two slaughter-bound mare/foal pairs were brought in from a foreign-owned slaughterhouse feedlot in Nevada. Since that day, more than 95 horses have found their way
through AAE's barn doors and are living healthy, happy, productive lives through the heroic efforts of our volunteers and the financial contributions of our donors. Thank you to all who have made the dream of saving these beautiful animals possible!
Buckaroo Leather is proud to be able to donate a
Cowboy rope halter with rawhide noseband and 10’ lead rope to the All About Equine Event in October (see above photo).
