Youth and Yearling Mustang Challenge

In various regions across the United States small competitions
(Youth & Yearling Mustang Challenges) are being held for youth who are interested in training and competing with a yearling Mustang.

Youth trainers in these programs pick up a yearling approximately 90 days before the competition and may compete in the following areas - Conditioning, In-Hand Trail Class, Showmanship, Costume, Freestyle, etc.  Youth and their families are required to adopt their yearling prior to the start of the competition, but they can transfer the adoption to another individual after the competition.

The 2014 Southern California Youth and Yearlings Challenge is a cooperative effort between the Mustang Heritage Foundation the BLM Wild Horse Program and TIP Trainer Sue Watkins. The "Little" Light Hands Horsemanship Competition will allow youth from 8 - 17 years to adopt a yearling mustang, train it for 60 days and then compete for over $1000.00 in prize money.

Susan L Watkins Youth and Yearlings Challenge will be on
November 30th 2014
at Kigers de los Californios in Perris, Ca.

Buckaroo Leather is a proud sponsor and will be donating an award for the event. I encourage you all to learn more about this competition.

New Three Rivers Horse Training Sidepull

Buckaroo Leather is proud to work with
horse trainer Alex Mufson

of Three Rivers Horse Training to create the
Three Rivers Horse Training, Alex Mufson Sidepull

The 3R sidepull is made from the finest heavy weight Hermann Oak Harness leather or Black Latigo leather. It has that smooth, rich, "broke in" feel. This sidepull Headstall is double and sewn with a soft chap lining, and oiled for that soft supple feel. This Headstall is a Side Pull style with a width of 5/8" available in a Regular Horse size. This Headstall has a 1" wide leather noseband and is available with Nickel plate hardware. It has a Jowel strap for stability but does not have a throat latch or brow band.

The 3R Sidepull is a favorite out at Three Rivers Horse Training based in Three Forks, MT!  Alex Mufson's philosophy is based upon a thoughtful approach to horsemanship, which works with the horse's mind to build a willing partnership.  The 3R Sidepull is a favorite for both the just started colt all the way to the seasoned performance horse.  The direct pressure allows for an intuitive communication feel for both the horse and rider, and anything that can be accomplished in a snaffle bit can be accomplished in a sidepull.

The 3R Sidepull removes the issue of problem teeth from the training process, which is particularly useful for young horses whose mouths are changing all the time.  Alex has requested a few modifications to the typical sidepull to make the 3R Sidepull more versatile in sizing and to prevent it from slipping into the horse's eye.  It is also great in the cold winter, as it does not involve waiting for a frozen bit to thaw!  Thoughtful horsemanship does not require a bit, because the work is with the horse's mind. The 3R Sidepull is an ideal headstall for those who do not want to rely on leverage and control, but want an honest examination of their relationship with their horse!

The Buckaroo Leather Blog

The Buckaroo Leather Blog has informative articles on horse tack, horse trainers, Buckaroo Leather events and articles like the one below on the proper fit of the Sidepull Headstall

How to Fit the Very Popular Sidepull Bitless Headstall

To begin, we want to have a willing horse. By walking up and offering the Sidepull and allowing your horse to willingly put their head into the bridle should help get the process started. It also creates an understanding and ease between horse and rider. Wait for the queues from the horse to let you know they are ready to begin. What you want to do once the horse is ready is to adjust the side pull out very wide to get the Sidepull on. That way we can easily adjust it on the horse. You will want to ensure the wide nose band is not adjusted too low. This will cause irritation to your horses breathing and nasal passages. Once on and properly adjusted you want to understand the horses facial configuration. Some horses can be very narrow, other may have more prominent cheek bones, and that will affect how we want to adjust the jowel strap. Make sure you set the horse to their individual configuration. The jowl strap prevents the Sidepull from moving side to side when pulling on the reins, which can cause irritation as well.
