If you use your horses and mules to pack or frequently venture into the back country and beyond the reassuring safety of the
trailhead you probably already have a working knowledge of hobbles. Unfortunately many horse and mule owners of today have never seen or used these remarkable versatile tools. Hobbles can be an excellent aid for every rider.
• Simply put hobbles are devices that limit the locomotion of stock by securing two or more legs. Similar to a pair of handcuffs that are placed around the pastern or cannon bones, hobbles will somewhat limit the range of movement of your animal and help to keep it somewhat near where you left it.
• On trail rides I’ll often take hobbles to let my horse graze during lunch as opposed to tying him up. If I’m eating and taking a break why not let him grab a bite as
well?
• Hobbles also make backcountry camping without packing in feed much more doable. With a set of hobbles and good grazing your
horse can forage for his own breakfast, lunch, and dinner saving you a lot of weight and room in your saddle bags.
• Contrary to what
some would believe hobbles will not keep a horse or mule from moving. Indeed if they desire, equines can and will move quite quickly and far once they’re used to hobbles. It’s for this reason that you still must keep an eye on the critters as they graze and be ready to put them up in a more secure manner after their bellies are full and they start to roam.
FDH is on the road again for my annual trip down unda. I arrived yesterday in Melbourne for the first week of horsing around and will be in New Zealand next week to visit my NZ Horses and their people. I really love both places and have met many awesome horses and people on each visit. I have also had the opportunity to help some horses that were misunderstood or misunderstood what humans wanted from them. This always makes me happy.
Each visit there is a unique lesson each horse and person combination presents. Friday the 7th is a demo at Lowden’s Saddleworld at 5:30pm. Followed by my 3 day clinic and private sessions in Strath Creek, Victoria. Then another demo in New Zealand Nov. 14th at Wairarapa NZRDA in Masterson followed by a 3 day clinic and private sessions.

Touching By Three Rivers Horse Training

Touching
I’ve been reading and thinking lately about touching. Not touching something in particular, but simply on the
idea, the power and the energy behind touch as discussed by those outside the horse world. I know that touch is a hugely powerful thing when working with horses and though it is discussed often by horse people throughout the industry, to me it is generally framed as something that is done to a horse, not something that is done with a horse.I don’t think touching is a one way transaction when there is a willingness about it. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a physical
transaction. In my reading (Warning: you are about to figure out just exactly how much of a nerd I am…) I’ve discovered that the experience of touching has much to do with the repulsion of electrons of the atoms between two objects or beings. That’s why you can sometimes experience touching something as you reach out to touch it, or experience being touched when someone or thing is reaching for you, before making any physical contact.
