New Spurs and Bits from Sliester of California

Buckaroo Leather is honored to offer USA made spurs and bits from Sliester of California. Sliester's spurs and bits are cowboy made since 1954. They are proud to have over 50 years of continuous USA production in the Equine Industry. Their spurs and bits are hand crafted in the Old California tradition.

Sliester is a progressive company that maintains quality as a tradition, and improvement as a continuing goal. Their contact with leading trainers and horsemen has given them a chance to provide what the professionals want -- quality, serviceability and dependability. Being a family owned and operated corporation like Buckaroo Leather, insures that each Sliester product is free of defects and comes with a 100% guarantee.

All bits are available in Horse size, Large Horse and Mule or small horse, cob, and Arabian horses.

These are the finest made spurs and bits around!!!!!!

These bits are hand crafted by the best in the industry bar None! Each Sliester Bit is custom made, never mass produced, offering a fine feeling of balance.

Sliester Bits feature the "SQUARE PIN." This keeps the cheek pieces from turning and pinching the horse's mouth, yet allows all the action required in a loose jawed bit.

The special alloyed metal from which the mouthpieces are made is the result of extensive metallurgical research. This special alloy creates a reaction within the horse's mouth that helps prevent dry mouth, thus reducing fatigue.

The Grace Foundation of                 Northern California

The Grace Foundation of Northern California

Buckaroo Leather would like to introduce to you a local rescue group called The Grace Foundation of Northern California. This group just recently saved abused horses in Susanville and  put the owner of the ranch in jail. Read more about The Grace Foundation below and  I encourage you to visit there website and follow them on facebook to find out how you can support them.

The Grace Foundation of Norther California is a 501 (c)(3) Non-profit organization that provides critical care and rehabilitation for abused and neglected animals and utilizes their rescued animals for assisted learning and therapeutic programs for children, youth and adults. This includes horses, dogs, cats, goats, pigs, chickens and cows. In 2011 alone they have rescued over 400 animals.

Here is the story of how the Grace Foundation began:

In 202, sixteen horses in a cruelty case were seized by Sacramento County Animal Control and placed in the care of Beth DeCaprio, a well-known small animal rescuer in the area. The horses began their journey housed on a small plot of undeveloped, residential land behind DeCaprio's house. Once she agreed to care for this unnatural herd, however, DeCaprio found her calling and the journey of what is now known as the Grace Foundation of Northern California.

Realizing that children were subject to cases of neglect and abuse just like her 16 horses were, DeCaprio decided to establish programs for children, individuals, and at-risk youth by putting some of these rescued animals to work as therapy horses. The equine facilitated programs, which are in effect to this day, include activities with the horses in which children and youth learn about and apply important skills including leadership, problem solving, creative thinking, responsibility, teamwork, assertiveness, communication, and relationship building. Activities provide the children and youth the opportunity to assist with the rehabilitation of an animal and provide that animal with a higher quality of life. Taking part in the animal's recovery, allows children and youth to build self-esteem and self-confidence, learn how to work with peers, gain a sense of feeling needed and valued, and the joy of what it feels like to make a difference in this animal's life.

In 2005, The Grace Foundation's equine assisted learning programs were approved through the Folsom/Cordova and San Juan Unified School Districts and private programs with individual at-risk youth began. 2005 also brought collaborative efforts between The Grace Foundation and the University of California - Davis, Center for Animals in Society & Veterinary Medicine Extension from the School of Veterinary Medicine. Throughout this year, over 200 children were involved in The Grace Foundation Educational and Enrichment Programs; and over 50 horses made "Grace" their home.

In January of 2006, MJM Properties donated use of their land (600 acres) for The Grace Foundation's new home. During that time, Grace collaborated with the City of Folsom and agreed to house and care for their Mounted Patrol Unit, in exchange for incorporation of the Mounted Police Patrol in Grace's educational programs. During 2006, the  of California-Davis, Center for Animals in Society & Veterinary Medicine Extension from the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Grace Foundation developed educational and therapeutic programs, and conducted research addressing questions for both animals and youth. The Grace herd grew to 84 horses, three goats and a calf by the end of 2006.

By 2008, over 5,000 children had participated in one or more of The Grace Foundation programs since their inception. This was the year that Grace also brought on a full-time, large animal veterinarian, and began collaboration with the Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School to provide farrier care for Grace's equine residents. New educational programs were added, including a Life/Science field trip approved by the State of California for science curriculum for grades 3 through 8. A new division of Grace called Pony Town was also established and built for the early intervention of childhood autism during 2008.

In 2009, a local non-profit organization which provided therapeutic riding programs for special needs individuals, called Ride and Shine was about to close its doors due to the poor economy and drop in funding and donations. They approached The Grace Foundation for help and, within a few months, Grace absorbed Ride and Shine and incorporated the group's platform for its own therapeutic riding program, which is now called "Ride and Shine at Grace".

In February of 2010, the Western States Horse Expo collaborated with the Grace Foundation to host the first annual "HELP Rescue Me Trainer's Challenge". The goal of the Challenge is to promote the benefits of adopting rescue horses, produce horses that are ready to go to work for their adopters, and help to showcase the training talents of quality, local trainers throughout Northern California.

"When I am An Old Horsewoman"

A few weeks ago I posted this poem by Patty Barnhart on the Buckaroo Leather Fan Page.

When I am an Old Horsewoman

When I am an old horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn't suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

By Patty Barnhart Originally published in The Arabian Horse World magazine in l992

Needless to say this poem was an incredible hit!!!!!

1,000 fans "liked" the poem and so I did some "digging" to find out more about the author. One of the Buckaroo Leather fans knew who the author is (small world)...so I contacted Patty for the background "scoop" on the poem and her life. Below is her story.....

"I started writing horse-related material when I edited a monthly Arabian club newsletter in the late 70's and 80's. I started writing a monthly story or poem for the newsletter to fill in space when stories were hard to come by. As a matter of course I sent a copy of  that newsletter to a now-defunct magazine called "The Lariat" based in Beaverton, Oregon. The editor contacted me about publishing the stories/poems. gave me a price, and I was off and running. Eventually she suggested that I might try other magazines that would pay better and I did. Since I raised and showed and generally enjoyed Arabians, it was natural to submit to the Arabian Horse World, where the poem "When I am An Old Horsewoman" first appeared. It has since been used on literally thousands of websites. I knew it was a good poem, but who knew it would resonate with so many. To say it has a life of its own is an understatement! Today, I am still receiving royalties from its being used as a commercial gift item.

While the bulk of my work appeared in Arabian Horse World, I have also been published in any number of equine-related magazines. I thoroughly enjoyed that phase of my writing and occasionally still submit pieces on a freelance basis. In addition, I have a ranch cookbook that contains the best of my writing along with some great Dutch oven recipes that I use on the ranch." - Patty

Patty's focus has shifted to chiller/thriller shorts, Hitchcockian in nature. Her second collection will be coming out hopefully before Christmas this year. She recently won 1st place in the short story fiction category in the Oregon Writers Colony Annual writing contest.

Her short story "Coda" set on a ranch won the award!!!!
Patty also belongs to a very active local writers group called. "The Writers of the Purple Sage".

She and here husband also owns a guest ranch, The Willow Springs Guest Ranch. The ranch sees guest from all over the U.S and International. They offer horse back riding, real "Dutch Oven" cooking by a campfire and much more.

Check our weekly blog to learn more about the Ranch, it is not only a great cowboy/cowgirl experience but the Ranch is run totally green and "off the grid"!!!

Learn more about Patty's cookbook by clicking here....it is $12.95 plus $3 shipping & handling. Watch the Buckaroo Leather fan page for sneek peaks of her recipes.
