 Cowboy Rituals

Think about how you get dressed in the morning- do you have a routine?

Well the Cowboys of the Old West did-
In the mourning a Cowboy begins dressing downward, First he puts on His hat, then his shirt and takes out of his shirt pocket his Bull Durham & Cigarette papers and rolls one... to start the day. He finishes dressing by putting on his pants, socks and boots.
To undress the Cowboy undresses upward, boots off, then socks, pants, and shirt. He never goes deeper than that. After he has removed the top layer he takes his hat off and lays his boots on the brim-so the hat won't blow away during the night. Spurs are never taken off boots.

Happy Trails!

Farah DeJohnette

Farah DeJohnette has over 20 years of horse training expertise. Her talent in competitive horse training blended with her Natural Horsemanship and Holistic programs make her a uniquely skilled Trainer.

Farah's scope is broad and embraces many different methods. To sum it up Farah's approach is a blend of Dressage based training meets Natural Horsemanship meets balanced seat riding or "Integrative Horsemanship".

Farah's Own Words:
"I would like to state that it is my personal pledge to myself and my current and future customers to continue to learn, grow, and stay open to new information and techniques so that I can be the best that I can be.

I am not defined by one training method: I am a horseman. There is only one kind of training and one kind of riding. It is called Horsemanship. And that is what I do. I study all disciplines and I learn from each one to create a rich knowledge base to draw from. This has allowed me the versatility to be able to work successfully with all types of breeds, temperaments, disciplines, and levels.

In the end, the horses have been the greatest trainers I've ever had. Too numerous to count, each horse I've worked with has provided me with their own unique lesson.  In fact, most of the things I learned about life, I learned in the presence of a horse."

Below is an article from her blog about being a good leader-

What does it mean to be a good Leader to your horse? In a lot of training the focus is on "being the boss" being the dominant one or the alpha. I have heard this uttered by many trainers at many competitions and even Natural Horsemanship clinicians.

First, lets talk about Lead versus Dominant energy. In a herd there are Lead, Dominant, and submissive horses. In people there are the same. Lead horses can be in charge of the herd but so can dominant horses. A herd lead by a Lead horse tends to be more balanced and peaceful then a herd lead by a Dominant horse.

So what's the difference? Lead horses are looking out for the highest good of the herd and individual. Lead horses don't make demands they make reasonable requests which seem inviting to horses. They tend to not use aggressive body language in general because they don't have to. Dominant horses can be aggressive if not out right mean at times to take rank and ownership of territory. They are much more likely to use big gestures and body language and engage in "Dominance games" with other dominant horses. These are the horses you often see playing roughly and wrestling when paired up.They are also likely to get this way with a person that approaches them with this type of energy.

To me being a good Leader to my horses means behaving as much like a lead ho
rse as possible. It means that if I want to be followed I should behave like someone who would be good to follow. Think about that. Are you someone you'd like to follow? Ask yourself this question. Would you happily follow your lead if you were a horse? It means thinking about what you are requesting of your horse and how they might feel about it. It means acknowledging their fears and helping them overcome them in a supportive way not a forceful one. It means thinking about the overall balance of the herd and all involved including yourself. Balance is so important. Yes we the people are included in that. Some people put so much focus on the horses well being that they fore go their own and that is not balanced Leadership either. A Leader is only as good as they are feeling in their core being. That means a happy balanced healthy Leader mirrors the same to their horses. Always think about that when you are getting ready to "Lead". We all have bad days and we are allowed to have them. In fact saying out loud "I'm having a bad day and it's ok" is a very freeing experience. Horses like emotional congruency much more then when we try to be perfect for them or cover our hidden fears, depression, anger or anxiety. We are only kidding ourselves if we think they can't read that in us. So next time you see your horse, think about preparing to be a good Leader and remember this is an ever changing role for us. Each day brings us different opportunities to Lead and Learn how to be better Leaders.

Mark Rashid (pronounced RASH-id) is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse's point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the "old man," who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark's clinics center on one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.

Equine Chiropractic  "An answer to your horse's problems"

by Mark Rashid

When I was a young trainer, I always just assumed that all behavioral problems that
horses develop stemmed directly from one of two things, either a bad attitude on the
horse's part, or bad handling on the trainer's part.

However, some time ago I also came to realize that there is one more important element
that should always be considered when trying to diagnose problem behavior in horses.
That one thing, put simply, may be a horse's inability to perform because it is in some
kind of pain that may not be visually evident to us.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. How can a horse be in pain without
showing some kind of visual sign of it? Well, I guess the answer to that would be: much
the same way we humans can be in pain without actually showing visual signs.

Over the years, I have come to realize that when dealing with problem behavior that is
due directly to the horse being in this kind of pain, the only way to effectively eliminate
the behavior is to eliminate the pain.

One of the cost effective ways I've found to accomplish this is by the use of an Equine
Chiropractor. Now, I know a lot of you are thinking, "I wouldn't take myself to a chiropractor, I'm sure not going to take my horse to one!" Believe me, I used to feel the very same way. I used to think that the entire chiropractic profession was nothing but a bunch of charlatans out to fleece unsuspecting individuals out of their wealth with the promise of a magical cure to their ailments.
That is until I met Dr. David Siemens.

"Dr. Dave" and I met at a time when I was at a loss as to why the horse I had been hired
to train was refusing to pick up its feet. Any time you would even offer to lift one of this
horse's feet off the ground it would become extremely violent and dangerous. This was
very perplexing due to the fact that in all other ways, the little mare was a complete angel and very easy to get along with.

After exhausting all my other resources and trying every training technique I knew with
very little success, I decided to call Dr. Dave. I did this in part to see if there was
anything to this chiropractic business, but also because I was pretty much out of all
other options.....
